Research interests
You need only to look around you at any gathering to note how diverse the biological differences are that exist between individuals. Some of these are easy to notice such as height and complexion while others require more investigation to ascertain such as sporting ability and intelligence. Differences also exist that affect an individual's risk of disease development, the types of diseases they might get and when treated, how they might to respond to the prescribed interventions including dietary, lifestyle and pharmaceutical regimens.
The genomics and systems biology research team seeks to understand the molecular basis for these differences that represent the net effects of genetic predisposition and influence of the environment. By analysing these differences using novel innovative techniques and state of the art technology we aim to identify new molecular pathways that modulate disease risk and progression. Understanding the complexities of these networks and pathways will aid in the development of more accurate predictive and diagnostic tests, facilitate the development of new classes of therapeutic drugs and lay the foundations for personalised medicine based on molecular profiling.

MAZIAR RAHMANI, MD, PhD
He obtained his medical degree (MD) at the Babol University School of Medicine, Iran in 1996. Following graduation from medical school, he joined the Endocrine Research Centre in Tehran to work with Dr. Fereidoun Azizi and his team to establish a large-scale cohort study, the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Dr. Rahmani then moved to Vancouver, Canada, to pursue his PhD training in Cell and Molecular Biology in the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2000. His efforts during PhD in Dr. McManus’ laboratory at The James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research, UBC, Vancouver, led to discoveries in several areas including identification of DNA sequences and transcription factors essential in regulation of proteoglycan versican, a gene with important roles in cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Furthermore, apart from his thesis-related research, Dr. Rahmani was an investigator in a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research study: “Gene-Environment Interactions in Circulatory and Pulmonary Diseases”. Dr. Rahmani has been pursuing his post-doctoral fellowship research in genetics and genomics of aging in Dr. Brooks-Wilson’s laboratory at the Genome Sciences Centre, Vancouver, Canada since 2007. He has been using an innovative strategy to detect associations between genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms - SNPs) and cardiovascular aging using microarrays to genotype more than 1,000,000 SNPs. Dr. Rahmani’s current research interests are on large-scale cohort study and whole genome scan of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. He is using variety of functional genomics approach to identify molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular and metabolic traits associated with aging. Dr. Rahmani currently holds appointments in Genome Sciences Centre, Vancouver, Canada and Research Institute for Endocrine Sciences, Tehran, Iran. He has published 34 original articles, presented 81 abstracts, and received 16 awards and 10 grant-in-aid support in the course of his career.
